A Happy New Year to you all. Thank you for all your support. For 2024, I think that I would like to use a variety of colors to create pieces that express diversity and light. This year as well I will be using Asian colors that matured throughout the Asian continent.

This show, Meiji Modern, is a popular show running from the end of 2023 to the beginning of the new year in the Asian Society NY.  Works of Takeuchi Seiho were amazing, and now, or rather, at long last, there is a recoginition of modern Nihonga painting that stems with Meiji era.

What was the 'classic' Japan that the great masters of the Meiji era aimed for, as they explored non-western modernism? The exhibition was organized around modern Nihonga paintings.  The work behind me is the work of Takeuchi Seiho. I did not realize how many pieces were in collections outside of Japan. These works will bring attention and international evaluation to Nihonga painting.

I was interviewed by several Chinese media. Not only were the ways of tea and of flower brought from China, so were ink paintings, medicine, architecture and Buddhism. They were passed onto Japan. Now, Chinese students comes to Japan to learn these things. Understanding the long, storied history of Chinese-Japanese relations, I would like to welcome Chinese students here.

I am at Seisa Public Elementary School in Tachikawa City.  The students in this picture will create very different works from the same crumbled mulberry paper.  I am always impressed with the diversity of ideas and creativities in each children.

I am contemplating on set designs for Mozart's Magic Flute opera which will be performed in February.  Instead of exploring either the traditional dichotomy of two opposing powers, or the idyllic day and night, I and the rest of the creative staffs would like to come up with fresh new ideas and ask why the Magic Flute is still relevant.

Some of my works will be shown in the National Museums of various countries, planned for 2024 and onward.  This is one of them, and I would like for it to be completed by January.  I've chosen this indigo color in reference to Hokusai.  At the same time, I am working on the next project, which will be based on Ungensaishiki — colors used in Nara during the Heian Period.
